Kurtis Blow is one of the founding fathers of hip-hop. The Harlem-born Kurtis Walker was the first rap artist to sign with a major label, the first to undertake a national concert tour and the first to have a gold record—the immortal 1980 hit “The Breaks.” Kurtis Blow’s success proved that rap was not just a fluke: rap was here to stay.
