From 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Central Park SummerStage
Our fourth evening of dance at SummerStage includes works of explosive creativity and calm command.
With a young, mutli-ethnic company an an adventurous mix of experimental dance and pop culture, Complexions Contemporary Ballet has built a reputation as one of the city's most diverse ensembles.
Founded in 1994 by Alvin Ailey alumni Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, Complexions is known for the densely-packed rhythms and explosive energy of Rhoden’s choreography, as well as the superb nimbleness of the dancers, led by the brilliant Richardson. The group’s sold-out January run at the Joyce Theater featured works inspired by both Bach and Marvin Gaye, and caused Clive Barnes to gush in The New York Post over the “targeted fierceness of [the dances’] rhythmic impulse.”
Tranquility and athleticism mark the choreography of Takehiro Ueyama, a veteran of the Paul Taylor Company and founder, in 2003, of the Take Dance Company. Dance critic Tobi Tobias noted, "He melds movement, music, and themes derived from his roots in both East and West. Ueyama is at his most inventive with the ever-shifting pattern of the figures on stage. Any given moment offers a picture that's exquistely balanced yet often surprising." Along with the nature-inspired "One", TAKE's SummerStage appearance will include the New York City premiere of Mr. Ueyama's "Looking for Water", set to a score by Damian Eckstein.
